This
locomotive, working now in Hurley, NM, came from the Hidalgo Smelter at
Playas, which was shut down permanently in 1999.
They had 4 white GP38-2 locomotives that were used to do all the switching in the yard, and they also traveled 30 miles from the Hidalgo smelter to the Separ spur to interchange with Union Pacific on a daily basis. There, the Hidalgo crew would pick up empty flat or box cars to take back to the Anode Dept., and would also haul loaded cars of concentrate also headed to the smelter – concentrate from various mines in the Southwest. The concentrate would be smelted, converted to copper anodes, placed on the flat cars or in the boxcars, and sent back to Separ. Phelps Dodge bought this locomotive brand new. Chino Mines took over ownership of the locomotive in April 2005 and brought it to Hurley. |
